I'm on vacation at the moment, having a lovely visit with my sister and brother in law in Vancouver. They are however muggles, and being immersed in the fiber world as I am, I forget that this is not the norm for others. They really don't know what they are missing out on though, do they? There have been a few comments that I just had to share with you.
We were invited by some friends of my sister and BIL to watch the first night of the Celebration of Light competition on their boat. This would require being on said boat a couple hours before the fireworks were to start. Sounded like good knitting time to me, so I mentioned to my BIL my plan to bring my knitting. He looked horrified! His response was "aren't you going to talk to people?" to which I of course replied that I could do both at once! In the end, I didn't take my knitting, only because we had a very long walk and I took only what I could fit in my pockets. I really wanted to, mostly, as an episode of Seinfeld said, "for spite."
My sister later asked if I was really going to take my knitting, and wouldn't it be hard to hold onto it? I said that I had a bag with a handle that wrapped around my wrist, making it very easy. I then told her about fiber events, and that people there would be walking around knitting. Her response: "that's bizarre." I asked what was bizarre about that, and she couldn't really provide a good answer for me.
I did however find some reprieve from my time here with muggles. Yesterday, Uli and I had a lovely yarn crawl. We went to five different stores, and I was happy to find lots of fiber to come home with me. I probably definitely would have ended up more if I was not limited to what would fit in my suitcase. Here's a shot of my spoils, all of it fiber to spin with the exception of some Dream in Colour fingering weight that I couldn't resist trying.
The Knitter's world must seem very exotic to the non-initiated. I've had every reaction from insane curiosity, to total dismissal, to down right rudeness. But in the end I have this skill that brings me peace of mind (and warm socks). I think it would have been fun to bring your knitting on the boat just to show them that you can socialize and knit at the same time.
Lovely fibre you bought. I'm excited to see it turn into yarn.

Yet, I bet your BIL is never without his camera...

Muggles are so easily surprised, aren't they?
Look at all the goodies you scored?! Nice work.
I say if the suitcase is too small, buy another! Seems to happen more often than not when I travel. ;-)
No, it is good to limit yourself - as I am learning.
Reading your other posts - I was in Kamloops and went to Twist of Fate. She is lovely - her shop is adorable (though I almost trashed the place by accident!) and her goods - my oh my!
You have quite the fibre haul yourself - and your handspun is gorgeous!
