Neckband and Buttonbands
Just an FYI, if you're using the checkered pattern for your ribbing, make sure to do your neckband and buttonbands in the round with a steek or two. I don't have a photo to show you what happens if you don't, but trust me, it isn't pretty. The last two stitches pull out and lie flat because of how you have to manipulate the ribbing to do the purl row. I had already started the button bands before I realized what happened on the neck, so I think I'm going to leave mine and live with the imperfection. I'll post photos when I get access to our digital camera again.

thanks for that timely reminder.
Only other option that I can easily see is to knit it "in the round" by planning on a facing, then binding the two off together on the edges.
I really don't like doing ribbing with steeks since that leaves an edge to be finished.
Darn - the purpose of all of this was to make it look cool and avoid most of the hand work....

I have used the garter stitch rib on several items and do not knit it with a steek -- no trouble with the edges rolling. I agree that dealing with cut edges on your bands is a disadvantage. I think the secret to most edgings is to knit them firmly. In doing my Kauni garter rib, I went down a needle size on the sleeve cuff, which I knit back and forth instead of in the round like the bottom hem.
